The Turn of the Screw

You’re sent to a posh country house to look after two orphans. But something feels wrong... very wrong. Is the young governess imagining things or is the house haunted? Maybe the children themselves are possessed by demons? This dark and deliciously frightening opera stars Ailish Tynan as the governess. The deceased staff member Peter Quint and Miss Jessel the ex-governess are beautifully sung by Robert Murray and the ex-English National Opera Harewood artist Eleanor Dennis. Gweneth Ann Rand plays Mrs Grose and Alan Oke sings the Prologue.

Directed and designed by Isabella Bywater, two different conductors, Duncan Ward and Charlotte Corderoy, take to the stage at different performances, an ENO debut for both of them. Paul Anderson is the Lighting Designer, Jon Driscoll is the Video Designer, and Myfanwy Piper is the Librettist. The plot comes from a Henry James horror novella dating back to the late 1900s, and it is just as scary today as it ever was. Expect a production to remember studded with disturbing music played by 13 instruments to create an atmosphere to remember. Be scared. Be very scared...

The whole cast were outstanding, particularly the lead Ailish Tynan, who was outstanding as the governess - what a voice!
