The Pirates of Penzance
Fly the pirate flag, grab a sword and head for the capital to enjoy one of the most popular productions of The Pirates of Penzance for quite a while. This is the ENO’s beloved Gilbert & Sullivan farce, a hot choice for family festive fun. Like all of the Victorian duo’s comic operas, there’s a very silly story and a feast of fantastic tunes to enjoy. Mike Leigh’s swashbuckling smash hit version leaves you with a big feel-good factor, perfect for people of every age.
When an apprentice pirate and the Major-General’s daughter fall in love, the couple faces a tricky dilemma. Will they overcome it? This particularly colourful revival is directed by Sarah Tipple and conducted by Natalie Murray Beale. There are some fantastic voices to delight you, including the current ENO Harewood Artist Isabelle Peters as Mabel, the former Harewood artist William Morgan as Frederic, Richard Suart as the Major General and John Savournin as the Pirate King. Prepare for a load of pirate fun starring big, bold voices and even bigger characters, and delivering a laugh a minute. Splendid.

Faithful to the Victorian wit of G&S I was brought up on G&S and thoroughly enjoyed the production. But have to admit my teenaged grandchildren seemed unsure how to evaluate it. It kept their attention but I don't think they came out chuckling.

A classic. Great acting and singing and a classic storyline with pleasingly modern, minimalist set
