To Die for [A Comedy] - English National Opera

This darkly comic new opera by British-Russian composer Elena Langer makes its UK premiere at ENO for one night only, following its debut in the Netherlands in 2026. Blending satire, absurdity, and social commentary, the opera explores society’s unhealthy obsession with fame, media spectacle, and public attention. Inspired by Nikolai Erdman’s 1928 play The Suicide, the story follows the troubled Semyón Podsekayev, whose existential despair drives him toward suicide after his failed attempt to reinvent himself by learning the tuba. As news of his intentions spreads, opportunistic figures — particularly TV presenter Ivan Vane — attempt to exploit his suffering for entertainment and financial gain, transforming personal tragedy into a grotesque public spectacle.

Originally commissioned in Moscow but cancelled after the invasion of Ukraine for being considered insufficiently patriotic, the opera has since emerged as a bold and subversive critique of celebrity culture and modern media. Directed by Sam Brown and conducted by Adrian Kelly, the production combines sharp humour with unsettling social insight, encouraging audiences to reflect on humanity’s fascination with notoriety, exploitation, and spectacle. Presented by Nederlandse Reisopera and the Phion Symphony Orchestra, this comic opera balances outrageous farce with deeper questions about authenticity, morality, and the value of human life in a culture driven by attention and profit.
