Verdi’s La traviata returns to the London Coliseum in Peter Konwitschny’s Olivier Award-nominated production, offering a stripped-back and emotionally intense interpretation of one of opera’s most beloved works. Set in the glittering world of Parisian high society, the story follows the celebrated courtesan Violetta, who abandons her glamorous lifestyle after falling deeply in love with Alfredo. Their happiness is threatened when Alfredo’s father, Germont, pressures Violetta to leave him in order to protect the family’s reputation. Heartbroken but selfless, Violetta sacrifices her own future, allowing Alfredo to believe she has betrayed him while concealing the painful truth and her worsening illness. The opera becomes a tragic exploration of love, sacrifice, and the destructive power of social expectations.

This minimalist production removes the traditional opulence often associated with La traviata, using simple staging to focus on the emotional vulnerability of the characters and making Violetta’s story feel strikingly contemporary. Verdi’s unforgettable score features some of opera’s most recognisable music, including the lively “Libiamo” drinking song and Violetta’s virtuosic aria “Sempre Libera.” The production stars Heidi Stober as Violetta, alongside Egor Zhuravskii as Alfredo and David Stout as Germont, with Kevin John Edusei conducting.
